Playground Superheroes

8th Dec 2020

In P.D.M.U. in Year 5 we have been discussing how we should treat others the way we want to be treated. We watched the trailer for the movie ‘Wonder’ and discussed what was happening to Auggy in the clip. We discussed how people were mean to him about the way he looked and how it made him feel. Auggy wished that he was invisible. That led us on to thinking about superheroes and some of the children suggested what they would like their superpower to be. Ellie-Mae wanted to be able to control the weather, Molly wanted to be able to read people’s minds, Isaac M. wanted to have super strength, Ryan wanted to be Spiderman, Zofia wanted to be able to talk to animals, Holly wanted to be able to see far away, Hannah and Jay wanted to be able to run super-fast, Emma-Lee and Rosie wanted to be invisible, Max wanted to be able to burn things with his eyes, Isaac D. wanted to live twice, Rocco wanted to be invincible, Amelia wanted to be stretchable and Gloria wanted to be able to fly. Jorja said that her favourite superheroes were her mum and dad.

We chatted about what people could have done to help Auggy. The children were set the task of creating a new playground superhero called ‘The Peacemaker’, or a name of their own choosing, a superhero that works to stop unkind behaviour in the playground and make sure people are happy and included.

We then watched 3 short clips of scenarios where unkind behaviour was taking place and the children then described what ‘The Peacemaker’ could have done to help. We had a really good time of discussion and the children enjoyed creating their own playground superheroes. We hope you enjoy looking at their creations.
