Language of Rights House Competition

13th Sep 2019

This week in assembly, we were focusing on some of the tricky language associated with rights. We revised some of the words we have learned over the past few years and what they mean.

We also learned about the concept of dignity. Dignity is a difficult concept to explain, but it is linked to worth and respect. Like our rights, human dignity is alienable - it is yours because you are born a human, you should not have to do anything to earn it.

Here are some ways we can treat other people with dignity:

  • Accept people for who they are, even if they are different to you.
  • Recognise and value people's hard work, talents, thoughtfulness and help.
  • Give people your full attention.
  • Include others and make them feel like they belong.
  • Help people feel safe - look out for their physical safety and speak kindly to them so as they are not worries about being shamed or humiliated.
  • Treat people fairly.
  • Empower people to act on their own behalf and be as independent as possible.
  • Give people the benefit of the doubt. Treat them as if they are trustworthy.
  • Take responsibility for our actions. Make amends if you have done something to hurt someone else.
