Victory in Europe

8th Nov 2016

It was announced today at 2.30pm in Whitehouse Primary School that the war is over.  Thankfully, before this news reached Year 4 we paid a visit to the Northern Ireland War Memorial in Belfast.  We learnt all about how WW2 impacted Belfast and we found out about the people who helped the war effort at home - nurses, fire fighters, the home guard, air raid wardens and the mobile canteen.  We completed a quiz in the museum gallery and tried on lots of different uniforms.

When we heard of Germany's surrender we celebrated with a class party.  We made newspaper hats, iced some buns, and made red, white and blue bunting to decorate the classroom.  We even recorded our own podcasts to let others know about the end of the war.

Year 4 are very sad that the war is over, but we are looking forward to our next topic - Materials and Staying Safe.
