'New Year, New You 2016'

15th Jan 2016

'New Year, New You 2016'

Following the success of last year’s wellbeing week, we started back in 2016 to New Year, New You. This week was designed to teach and challenge our pupils at the start of a new year to reflect and learn how to look after themselves. This year we focused on emotional wellbeing, healthy eating, physical wellbeing and safety. Pupils had the opportunity to take part in workshops each day including Jumping Clay, Mini Olympics, Play Bus, Jo Jingles and Tesco healthy break samples.

Year 6 and Year 7 went on an adventure day to Abbey Community College where they experienced a number of fantastic classes ranging from Home Economics, Performing Arts, Science, PE, ICT and Art. This was a great day for pupils to get a feel for how a secondary school day runs and the types of classes they can enjoy.

We were also supported by a number of parents who were able to share their expertise and give talks to the children on mindfulness, dental care, fire safety and how to look after your eyes. Pupils also learnt about their daily sugar intake and visually shown the amounts of hidden sugar in foods and drinks we eat every day.

Another highlight of the week was a visit from a Belfast Giant. Jonathan Boxill and the Giants school co-ordinator talked to year 3 and year 4 on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. They told us about food labelling and how to tell which foods we should be eating more of. After this the Giant went through some exercises that we could all do.

Year 7 were also joined by Love for life who aims to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to make good choices when it comes to relationships and growing up.

Our final day began with a special big breakfast and the whole school dressed up for Be Bright, Be Seen day. Chain Reaction cycles talked to all pupils about bike safety and the importance of wearing bright clothes to keep safe.

This themed week would not have happened without the support of families, local businesses and staff who put together a brilliant week for pupils to understand the importance of health and wellbeing.
