Julie from Barnardos

18th Jan 2019

Julie came in during NYNY to talk to all the children from Y1 to Y4. Julie comes to our school every Tuesday and works for Barnardos as a trained counsellor.

She popped in to Y1 and 2 to say hello to the boys and girls.

She talked to the Y3's about an Emotional First Aid Kit. She explained that sometimes we feel hurt on the inside where no-one else can see and gave us ideas for our first aid kit to help. Here's what was in our kit:

  • A phone, which represented talking to friends, family or teachers.
  • A teddy, as hugs make us feel good.
  • A tennis ball, which represents exercise. Exercise releases good chemicals into our brains and make us feel better.
  • A treat, like a chocolate bar, day out with the family or a relaxing bath.
  • A hobby- having an interest helps us meet new people and time to do something we enjoy.
  • A balloon - breathing helps relax us when we feel tense, stresses or angry.

Y4 learned about their upstairs and downstairs brain. When we 'flip our lid', our feelings take over and our thinking brain can't work properly. Julie gave us strategies to help get our thinking brain working again when this happens.
