World War 2 is Almost Over!

18th Oct 2016

Year 4 are not looking forward to the end of World War 2.  We have enjoyed finding Germany, Austria, Poland and the United Kingdom on a map of Europe.  We found it hard to believe that children were sent without parents to the countryside, with very little in their suitcases.  We learnt about how the government used posters to try to encourage the public to 'Dig For Victory', 'Make Do and Mend' and 'Waste Not, Want Not', we even had a go at designing some posters of our own and planted some radish seeds as part of our Year 4 'Dig For Victory' campaign (don't ask what happened to the radish seeds).  We would have missed a lot of our favourite foods, many of them were not available because of rationing.

The Blitz was definitely a highlight of the topic.  During ABL we turned cardboard boxes into terraced houses for our Blitz street, making sure that each window was covered with a blackout curtain.  We managed to add street lights and trees before it was hit by a German doodlebug, destroying half of our street.  We constructed our own Anderson Shelter on the carpet and children had to create an air raid tableau whilst other groups were busy creating an animation of the Blitz using Photostory.

We are now waiting for news of Germany's imminent surrender and look forward to VE Day celebrations after half term.
